Today’s blog is written by Estela Menjivar, our women’s case coordinator in the Lighthouse Resource Center. She wanted to share a celebration of our Salvadoran roots and reflect on our September 15th Independence Celebration as a way to honor our heritage, but also the talent in our community and the transformation happening.

In the Lighthouse Resource Center, the celebration of El Salvador’s Independence is much more than a traditional civic celebration: it’s a living reflection of strength, healing and overcoming. Under our mission, Freedom to Grow, we experienced an unforgettable day where art, love, respect for our country, and personal growth came together as one heart. I want to share with you the story of this beautiful day through its most meaningful moments.

A Journey of Change and Personal Growth

The most beautiful part of this event is the human story behind every face. Everyone who took part, from those who shared the story of our national symbols to those who danced on the stage, is part of our active community. Participants included graduates of our Level System program as well as individuals currently undergoing their own process of change. Their participation is a clear testament that with support and faith, transformation is possible.

The Fruit of Their Own Hands

The journey began days earlier in our sewing workshop. The women who participated in the folk dance proved that talent knows no limits. They crafted their own beautiful traditional dresses, cutting and sewing every detail in the blue and white colors of our flag.

The Splendor of Dance and Tradition

The hard work behind the sewing machines came to life on stage. With pride and grace, the women showcased their handmade dresses in a lovely folk dance performance. The movements and vibrant colors filled the venue with joy, celebration and the rich cultural heritage of our Salvadoran homeland.

Characters Who Bring Culture to Life

Creativity was also at the heart of the celebration. The event featured traditional characters such as the Torito Pinto, filling the atmosphere with laughter, energy and a deep sense of cultural identity that inspired everyone in attendance.

Respect and Honor for Our Country

With hearts full of gratitude, the community came together for the official ceremonies. From the entrance of the national flag to the solemn moment when attendees placed their hand over their hearts to sing the national anthem, respect and unity took center stage throughout the day.

This day reminded us that true independence is achieved when we break free from the chains of the past and allow ourselves to flourish as a community. Thank you to each and every person for being a part of this beautiful mission…Freedom to Grow!
